Only a handful of new smartphones, wireless dedicated devices, some BlackBerry versions, and the iPhone can connect to the Internet by using the WiFi channel.
Take a look at your device's user manual for instructions on how to enable the WiFi radio, if it has one.
One of the key benefits of connecting to the Internet by WiFi from your WiFi-enabled phone is money. The money you save by your expensive, limited wireless data plan in lieu of free unlimited WiFi access, for example.
And, sometimes wireless data coverage is not available at all, but WiFi is — like in a basement or on a train.
